Great Danes are BIG.
Because of their size, they require some special considerations. They can knock over small children by accident and clear coffee tables with a wagging tail. Many are also tall enough to reach your kitchen counter with ease.
Their size also increases their expenses compared to most other breeds. Medications are given to pets based on weight, so you’ll have to buy more meds when needed. They also require more high-quality food to maintain a healthy weight.

Great Dane Personality
Great Danes are an affectionate, gentle breed with many being quite clingy, wanting to follow you around and stick to your side. We call them “velcro Danes”.
They are sensitive in nature which makes them very sweet but might also make some a bit more prone to separation anxiety than some breeds.
Danes are playful and, like any dog, need interaction and exercise to keep them happy and stimulated. They are quite goofy!
Danes are not particularly energetic once they reach adulthood. Older Danes are particularly easy keepers, enjoying hours of cuddling with their people.
Great Danes are like any other dog when it comes to interactions with other pets or people. They benefit from consistency and proper introductions.
Like all dogs, they thrive in households with consistent boundaries, positive reinforcement training, and with children who know not to tug tails, climb on them, etc.
Great Dane Health Conditions
Danes are more prone to these medical conditions than many breeds.
Cardiac Disease
Arthritis
Thyroid diseases
Gastric torsion/bloat
White Danes often have vision / hearing impairment.
Feeding Great Danes
All dogs have greater nutritional needs than ads for the low cost foods lead you to believe. Their bodies run best on quality food just like humans’ do. Think of it like you eating a balanced, whole food diet versus a fast food combo every day. You’d be alive either way but likely with a shorter life and definitely more health problems along the way. We are happy to supply you with some information about choosing quality foods.
Feeding guidelines for giant breed puppies are critical to their development. This cannot be overstated! Feeding Great Dane puppies high calcium puppy formulas could result in developmental orthopedic diseases that cause deformities and pain.
Need Help With Funding?
We are excited to announce a new partnership with Rising Above Great Dane Funding. This partnership is a major step toward the ongoing commitment we have to our adopters and hope you are as excited as we are.
Rising Above Great Dane Funding is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide financial assistance to Great Dane parents experiencing economic hardship. So what does this mean for our adopters?
This means our previous adopters are eligible to apply for financial support if their Great Dane needs vet care that cannot be afforded due to economic hardship and extenuating circumstances; even if the adopters are outside of Rising Above’s coverage area.
We adopted our Great Danes to your family for a reason, so this further solidifies our commitment to finding loving, forever homes for our Great Danes. Life and finances don’t always go as planned and we all need a helping hand at times.
